Alloy of iron and carbon, Steel is commonly called stainless or stainless steel when it has a high chromium content - in quantities between 11% and 30% - an element that undergoes a phenomenon called passivation. It has a density very close to that of iron. About 1.600 million tons of steel are produced every year in the world (2016), due to the fact that this metal is easily applied in all fields. PLANIUM proposes it for textures as finishes; the processes used are those of brushing and satin finishing (also in the “steel canvas” version, with double orthogonal satin finishing), as for other metals, or with further processing: embossing and oxidation. Oxidation leads to Oxidized Steel and Calamine or, when electrolytic, to Stainless Concrete (the name is linked to the desired aesthetic similarity with the material, but it is always a steel).

Stainless Steel is inserted in both internal and urban contexts because it reflects what is around it and therefore makes it "participant": a metal that is the protagonist in architecture as well as in interior design, as well as a constant material in the objects we wear every day. Its chromatic tones belong to the sphere of light, silvery grays.

The Embossed Steel, already more elaborate, has its own materiality that makes it distinct and accentuates its friction function thanks to the surface that is historiated for the process. The processing to obtain this type of material is ancient and the colors that are created take into account the plays of light created by the two-dimensionality of the embossing.

Calamine, a superficial oxidation layer that is generated during the hot rolling of a steel plate, is one of the most chromatically shaded materials of PLANIUM as it passes from Air Force blue to anthracite gray, from light blue to streaks of magenta red. For this reason, Calamine is highly appreciated by Designers and Architects, for interiors as well as for exteriors.

Oxidized Steel is very unique due to its color, which stands out immediately; this is because its dominant color refers to two warm metals, it is placed in the vicinity of Copper, Bronze: yet this metal, being a Steel, despite having a burnished character that brings it closer to autumnal tones, still contains within itself the silvery chromatic “cold” nuances. The gray content goes in the direction of Lead Grey or Manganese.

From a chromatic point of view, Stainless Concrete echoes Concrete and for this reason, despite being a Steel, it has taken on this name. However, this is not enough to fully evoke the image of a polychromatic color: Ash Gray, Khaki, Shell, Platinum. What prevails is an effect of abstraction, almost a mystery with clear characters. It is also the most suitable metal for an Industrial-type setting, especially if laid on the floor, giving some reflections of shine and shadow.
